Smoke-firing!

Vessels cast from the mould as before were left to dry and then burnished before bisque firing in a commercial kiln.

They were then fired overnight in smouldering sawdust (see left).

Carbon from the smoke is absorbed into areas of the porcelain's surface

The results are subtle and wildly unpredictable - perfect!
